Our Post-Labor-Day Life

How to take advantage of fall energy.

Our Post-Labor-Day Life

As the calendar turns to September, a new wind seems to blow in.  And doesn’t smell like beach and coconut iced drinks.  It smells more like the exhaust of school buses and calendars quickly filling up.  So we take in a fortifying fall breath, roll up our sleeves and get to work.  School paperwork and filling up the calendar flows right into starting early Christmas checklists.

It’s so tempting to take the high energy of summer and push it right into the work that needs to be done in fall.  But the problem with this, is that fall isn’t a season of yang.  Fall is a season of yin.

The refreshing motivation that autumn brings isn’t meant to be applied to our Christmas lists.  It’s meant to motivate us into curiosity and newness.

The return of the fall routine isn’t there to contain and discipline us.  It’s there to comfort us, providing a more stable and consistent energy.  (Countering the ups and downs of summer.)

The cooler weather sweeps away the hazy-daze of summer and brings us clarity of thought.  But what are we going to do with that clarity?  Let’s use that power for good!  Let’s use it to clearly see the present moment.  Let’s go on evening walks and notice how good our clothes feel when they aren’t drenched in sweat.  Let’s stop looking back at the vacations other people got to do this summer and clearly see – and be thankful for – the simple happiness that apples and pumpkins and campfires bring us.

Let’s take full advantage of the yin of fall.

Until next time,

Laura
